Torches can no longer be used to light fires but give protection when equipped. Clothing and now food & drink allow you to survive in these areas. Also keep in mind that you can no longer die of hunger and thirst but after not eating and/or drinking for a time(24 hours I believe) you'll face temporary combat debuffs.
