This symphony is very different in structure and time signatures to the previous two works. In the first movement I acknowledge the influence of my colleague and friend for many years Lieut-Colonel Ray Steadman-Allen whose initial representation of the tune Ascalon in his work Daystar is similar in texture and style. The third verse of this song refers to the idea of Christ as pure light: ‘Fair is the sunshine, fairer the moonlight’. As we think of Christ as pure light, it opens us up to contemplate the powerful truth of the peace of God that can be ours, leading into an overwhelming joyous third movement, with lots of percussion and in a Latin American style. Movement four is largely unaccompanied, with voices declaring ‘love was the reason he came’. That perfect endless love is represented by a very long sustained note in the sopranos and basses that eventually brings this symphony to its conclusion. Not a loud triumphant ending but something that will elevate our thoughts heavenward towards our eternal home in the presence and the love of Christ.
