What is Hemolysis?

Hemolysis or hemolysis is the medical term used to describe the destruction or breakdown of red blood cells. The combining form “hem/o-” actually means blood, or in this case blood cells, while “lys/o-” or “lysis” refers to the breaking down or destruction of something. Hemolysis is known to lead to anemia, a condition that develops when there’s a low amount of red blood cells in the body. There are two types of hemolysis. There is extravascular hemolysis and intravascular hemolysis. The term “extravascular” simply means outside of the vessel, the blood vessel. While “intravascular” means within the blood vessels. Hemolysis can be caused by quite a number of things. There are conditions that are caused by instability in hemoglobin, such as sickle cell, anemia, and thalassemia. You have enzyme deficiencies, like G6PD deficiency, or pyruvate kinase deficiency.
