The World Health Organization (WHO) has predicted that by the year 2020, depression will be the second most frequent cause of disability worldwide, second only to ischemic heart disease. By examining the two integral concepts of health in Islam and extensive case studies, Dr. Farha Abbasi will demonstrate how religion and spirituality often assist in healing for people belonging to or practicing a religion, including how the Imams can play a pivotal role in creating faith-based mental health initiatives. Speaker: Dr. Farha Abbasi, Psychiatrist FARHA ABBASI, M.D., is an assistant professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Michigan State University and staff psychiatrist. She emigrated from Pakistan and settled in the United States in 2000. Her areas of interest are cultural psychiatry and teaching medical students how to provide culturally appropriate care to Muslim patients. She works with the Muslim-American community to encourage integration rather than isolation from mainstream society. She has established the Muslim Mental Health Conference and is the managing editor for Journal of Muslim Mental Health. 00:03 Intro and short speaker bio 01:12 Faith and mental health 01:34 WHO predictions on depression 03:37 Maqasid Al-Shariah 08:56 Two integral concepts of health in Islam 24:10 Mental illness or spiritual weakness 28:07 Religious beliefs or religious delusions 33:07 DSM-IV definition of delusion and DSM V as a new category 34:59 The role of religion and spirituality in healing 38:03 Hierarchy of help-seeking 39:27 The role of imams ub creating faith bases mental health initiatives 40:10 Task shifting 40:45 Case 45:05 Therapy, medications, spiritual/religious therapy Q&A Session 46:09 You discussed about how important it is for someone to have a therapist, who shares the same faith as you because it helps guide that person in the right direction.
