Father uses children to cultivate pot plants

MIDDLETOWN, Ohio (Larry Davis) -- A local father is accused of using his children and those of his girlfriend to help him cultivate his pot-growing operation. The children were between 7 and 12-years-old. The grow operation was set up inside the house, including the children's bedrooms. Police say the three small children were the father's little helpers. A neighbor said he was stunned when his neighbor, Michael Smallwood, was accused of allegedly growing marijuana inside a small, north Middletown home. He was even more shocked to learn small children were being used to help grow the pot. Michael Smallwood is charged with cultivating marijuana and two counts of endangering children. His girlfriend, Megan Ozdemir, is also charged with child endangering. Middletown police say there was marijuana growing throughout the home. A tent was set up in the main bedroom for the majority of the growing but police also found plants in the children's bedrooms and the kitchen area. Officials say it appears that the children helped water the plants and keep a journal to track the growth of the marijuana. Police say adults often keep home-grown marijuana operations away from children, but in this case the kids were allowed to take part. Megan Ozdemir has been released from jail. Smallwood remains in jail on a 10,000 dollars bond. The children are staying with family. Police say when they arrested Smallwood he told the, "It's just marijuana, it's legal in other states."
