In this passage, the Lord declares, "I hate, I despise your religious festivals; I cannot stand your assemblies." He goes on to denounce the injustice in the courts, the heavy taxation, and the pervasive evil among the people. The Lord expresses that He is not interested in outward displays of affection, false offerings of praise, or tithes. Instead, He desires holiness and calls for "justice to roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream" (Amos 5:24). The book of Amos highlights how God, in His mercy, used famine and a lack of food and water to warn His people and turn them back to Him. However, despite these acts of mercy, the people refused to repent. This ultimately led to their preparation for complete destruction, including the desecration of their land and temple.
