In this segment, we break down Jakob Weatherspoon, one of the most intriguing flips in UNC’s 2026 class and a defensive back who brings elite athleticism and a championship pedigree from Avon High School in Ohio. Weatherspoon was originally committed to Ohio State, even visiting Columbus ten times and taking his only official visit there. UNC offered him after that commitment — and still managed to flip him. That kind of late recruiting win tells you how strong the fit felt on both sides. On the field, Weatherspoon has been a consistent winner. As a junior, he helped lead Avon to a 16–0 record and an Ohio Division II state championship, finishing the season with 73 tackles and two interceptions. As a sophomore, he contributed 50 tackles and two picks during a 14–1 campaign that reached the state semifinals. This fall, he once again helped guide Avon back to the state championship game, marking the program’s second straight appearance. Athletically, Weatherspoon is a difference-maker. A state champion in the 400-meter dash, he brings verified speed and stamina that translate directly to the secondary. He moves fluidly, closes quickly in pursuit, and isn’t afraid to deliver a physical hit when the moment calls for it. His range shows up both in deep coverage and when tracking plays sideline to sideline. What makes him especially valuable is his versatility. He has the tools to line up at corner or safety, giving the staff flexibility in how they deploy him. He combines coverage instincts with football intelligence, showing awareness in zone looks while maintaining competitiveness in man coverage. His ability to process quickly and react decisively gives him a high floor, while his athletic traits give him significant upside. Our take: Weatherspoon is a rare blend of speed, toughness, and positional flexibility. With his championship background and multi-position skill set, he projects as a key piece in UNC’s secondary rebuild and a defender capable of making an impact early in his career. 📌 Subscribe for more Carolina Football insights 🎙 New episodes of the Tar Pit Podcast drop weekly Follow us: X (Twitter): https://x.com/TarPitPod Instagram: / tarpitpod TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@tarpitpod?_t=...
