We leave Culemborg behind and make our way toward Nijmegen via Tiel, snaking through the Dutch canals as the weather finally starts to improve. Spirits are high—until we realise we’ve lost most of our fresh water. Things get serious when we enter the Waal River, the powerful shipping artery that connects Rotterdam to the Rhine. With the current firmly against us, Awanui NZ is working hard—and not everyone is happy to share the river. A large commercial barge makes his feelings very clear, passing less than three metres away and reminding us just how small we really are out here.
