The step pace is a 4 beat gait, but not a clear 4 beat. The footfall instead of having clear separation is closer together, so instead of having 1-2-3-4, you get 1-2 3-4. So there is a longer space between the 2 sides of the horse. Because of this, you usually get a soft bounce in the saddle. It can be a smooth gait but is not always the best gait for your horse in the long run. Many horses for sale are step pacing in their videos if you look close. You will even see it in the show ring once you start to pay close attention to the horse's foot fall. It can be a fun gait, but many times if you go faster since it is so close to a pace, the horse instead of gaiting smoothly faster will fall into the pace. The reason it is not so good for the horse in the long run, is because many horses are strung out, high head and inverted when they do this gait instead of engaging their hindquarters and powering from their back end. They are swinging their legs instead of picking up and placing them down. Due to this it can put more pressure on the horse's spine, SI joint, stifles and hocks. So it is better to work on the horse's gait and try to get more separation of their legs. Lateral movements can help to accomplish this as well as using poles.
