In one way, it describes the reaction of many people when standing in front of a painting by René Magritte. What a painting signifies, how it translates meaning from the artist and becomes an object for interpretation for the viewer, what is the role and communicative nature of the painting? These are questions Magritte wanted to explore with his art. René Magritte was a belgian painter and sculptor. Studying at the art academy in Brüssel in 1914-1916, he became part of the Dadaist and surrealist movement in contemporary European art. Inspired by Giorgio de Chirico, his expressive paintings are characterized by the formal traditional and naturalistic way of representing people and objects, but in surreal and bizarre situations. Magritte's art makes the observer think and ponder, it provokes the viewer into looking at the world in new and curious ways. His art has in later years been central in the study of semiotics.
