The story of the Genovese crime family's famed 116th Street Crew begins in the 1890s with the emergence of the Morello Gang in New York. This was one of the first Sicilian organized crime clans in America, founded by Giuseppe Morello and his half-brothers Nicholas (Nick) Terranova, Vincenzo Terranova, and Ciro Terranova, who all hailed from Corleone, Sicily. Arriving in New York around 1892–93, the Morello-Terranova family initially settled in Manhattan’s East Harlem (Italian Harlem) and gained power through Black Hand extortion of local businesses and illegal gambling operations. By the turn of the century, Giuseppe Morello had built an underworld empire in East Harlem known as the 116th Street Mob (or Morello Gang), named after the crew’s base around East 116th Street. This crew continued with the likes of Cero Terranova and Trigger Mike Coppola. It was respected by Lucky Luciano, Frank Costello and Vito Genovese. This crew had upwards of 60 made men and 150 associates at its peak and was a crew that started off Sicilian but became Calabrian. We go until the end of Trigger Mike's range and the beginning of Fat Tony Salerno. Stay With Real Mob Stories with James Proctor as we bring you the exciting story of New York Mob's most powerful and richest crew ever.
