For eight years, a NATO battlegroup has stood watch in Estonia, guarding against external aggression while assuring their Allies with their presence. While many Estonians citizens have caught a glimpse of the battlegroup during training exercises, few have gotten an insider’s perspective on how it works, and what it can do. That’s why Desiree Mumm, an Estonian video producer, put on a Kevlar helmet and flack jacket to embed with the UK-led multinational battlegroup during exercise Hedgehog 25. During the exercise, the battlegroup worked alongside the Estonian Armed Forces and practised defending the country from attack. Watching the troops in action, she was able to see how the Allied soldiers had learned how to move through the dense forest, making them uniquely suited to defending the Baltic state. They have also forged a close working relationship with the Estonian Armed Forces, improving their ability to respond in the event of a crisis. In this video, we see Desiree experience the exercise firsthand while reflecting on the value of collective defence.
