Kagawa was one of the most exemplary organizers of practical Christianity that anyone in Japan or the rest of the world had ever seen. For most of his life, he regarded himself as an evangelist, and yet he became renowned as a social reformer, poet, preacher, and unwavering pacifist. Compared to Gandhi and Schweitzer because of his unflagging care and compassion for the poor, he would eventually be known as The St. Francis of Japan.
