What is PAAS? PAAS stands for Platform as a service and is a form of cloud computing. A PAAS provider will provide software hardware and infrastructure for developers to develop, run, host and manage their software and applications on. The users connect to the platform over the internet as its stored in the PAAS providers datacentre so is referred to as being in the cloud. A couple of examples of PAAS are: google app engine and open shift. So why would a company want to connect to a platform in another companies datacentre to develop and host their applications rather than build their own platform. One of the main reasons is cost, running the platform requires infrastructure which is incredibly expensive, with a PAAS provider you will pay a monthly subscription in most cases which requires very little start-up costs. Another reason is it speeds up the time needed to develop software and get it to market as you don't need to spend time building the platform and setting up infrastructure. Future proofing is another reason a company might use a PAAS provider, they wont need to update the platform or the infrastructure themselves, this will be handled by the PAAS provider who will do it when necessary meaning they will always be on the latest version and running on compatible infrastructure. One final reason to use a PAAS provider is Flexibility. Employees can log in remotely from anywhere to the platform rather than having to be connected to a server on their internal network. This allows employees to work from anywhere and quickly login to check something from their mobile device if needed urgently. #paas #cloudcomputing #computing
