Korean cars face double crisis of falling exports, domestic sales

한국 자동차 수출, 내수 위기 South Korea's traditional growth engine has been rebounding strong as of late. However, the auto industry has been struggling. Posting the worst export numbers since the last global financial crisis, and losing appeal to domestic consumers. Cha Sang-mi takes a closer look at this discouraging development. Korea's car industry, the country's second largest source of exports, has been suffering from a double blow since 2016 due to falling auto exports as well as dropping sales in the domestic market. The Korea Automobile Manufacturers Association says Korea exported only one-point-three million cars in the first half of 2017. This is the lowest number since 2009, when Korea's exports plunged due to the global financial crisis. A recent General Motors' pullout from the European market is a factor behind the declined export figures, as GM Korea's Gunsan plant was in charge of assembling small vehicles for Europe and Russia. Domestic sales were also four percent lower on-year as of the end of last month. More than 800-thousand cars were sold domestically as of June last year, yet this year figures stood at nearly 780-thousand. Experts say higher demand in foreign cars is one of the main reasons to the gradual drop.
