Why did Private John C. McKinney stand alone against nearly 100 Japanese soldiers during World War II — and reportedly kill 41 of them in just 36 minutes? This is the story of how a Georgia farm boy’s lifelong hunting skills turned him into one of the Pacific’s most formidable one-man defenders. May 11, 1945. Near Dingalan Bay on Luzon, McKinney of Company A, 123rd Infantry Regiment, was resting in his tent when a Japanese sergeant slashed through the flap and struck him with a sword, severing part of his ear. Reacting instantly, McKinney grabbed his M1 rifle and killed the attacker with the butt of the weapon. Then he saw them — scores of Japanese soldiers breaching the perimeter. Every instinct said run. Every rule said wait for reinforcements. McKinney did neither. What the sharecropper’s son from Georgia relied on that morning wasn’t just military training. It was survival instinct sharpened by years of hunting — patience, movement, accuracy under pressure. Armed with only his M1 rifle, he fought off wave after wave of attackers. Some he shot at close range. Others he struck down in brutal hand-to-hand combat. When American reinforcements finally reached his position, they were stunned by the scene. The number of enemy dead surrounding McKinney would make him a legend — and ultimately earn him the Medal of Honor. 🔔 Subscribe for more untold WWII stories. 👍 Like this video if you learned something new. 💬 Comment below: What other WWII tactics or battles should we explore next? #worldwar2 #ww2history #ww2 #wwii #ww2records
