Nasal congestion is quite common in tonsillitis or any other upper respiratory tract infection especially so in children and since the passage is smaller, it gives a lot of trouble especially in children and especially young children and these infections or inflammations are associated with some swelling s which will again compromise the airway a little. So the kids end up having also little difficulty in breathing and they even tend to open the mouth and breathe through the mouth. Managing the nasal congestion is very simple. We can start with simple home remedies like steaming, maybe saline nasal drops or as frequently as required to using some decongestant nose drops or decongestant syrups commonly available commercially can be used and the basic problem tonsillitis has to be dealt with if required if there is significant throat pain and fever, then antibiotic is also required. A decongestant nasal drop is used mainly in bigger children, whereas saline drops can be used in smaller children provided they are getting some relief in that the mucous which is collected may not be blown out or take out in a forceful manner. So advice the children against blowing or cleaning the nose or snotting or spitting out. As far as the basic problem the tonsillitis is treated, the nasal congestion is also settled down over the next few days.
