It is said that at the Manikarnika Ghat of Kashi, Lord Shiva himself provides Taraka Mantra to those who die and his soul gets liberation from the cycle of life and death. This is the reason why most people in Hinduism want their cremation to take place at the Manikarnika Ghat in Kashi after his death. The Manikarnika Ghat is located on the banks of the Ganges river in Varanasi and there are two routes available to reach here, one of which itself is the river Ganga where you can reach through the nave and the other is the road, which is located in Kashi. Kashi starts at the entrance of Vishwanath and the Manikarnika gate near the Gyanvapi area and passes through the narrow streets of Benaras, which are known as Lahori Tola and Manikarnika Galli. There is a kund on the banks of the river Ganges, which is believed that this kund is also ancient than the river Ganges in Kashi and Jagat Palanhar Lord Vishnu built this kund with his Sudarshan Chakra here for bathing Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, and During the time period of bathing, Karna flower of Mata Parvati fell in this pool, which Mahadev discovered. This Kund was named after Manikarnika Kund in the name of Karnaphaul of Goddess Parvati and the ghat adjacent to this Kund came to be known as Manikarnika Ghat in Kalkhand. The Panchkroshi circumambulation of Kashi also starts from this place. It is believed that at this Manikarnika Ghat, Lord Shankar performed the last rites of the body of Mother Sati. For this reason, this shrine is known as Mahashmshan. There is also an ancient temple of Tarakeshwar Mahadev on the Manikarnika Ghat, with the belief that Lord Shankar himself gives Taraka Mantra in the ears of the dead creature, which gives salvation to the deceased soul. The fire of pyre never calms down at this majestic ghat of Kashi. That is, there is a cremation of someone for 24 hours throughout the year. 200 to 300 dead bodies are cremated here every day. According to the Garuda Purana, the last action should not be done after the evening, but Manikarnika Ghat is called Mahashmashaan due to its association with Lord Shiva. And here the funeral is allowed round the clock. For Hindus, this ghat is considered the most sacred for cremation. It is said that Manikarnika Ghat has been blessed by Lord Shiva with eternal peace.
