Tarot cards first appeared in Italy in the early 1400s and were hand painted in gold, having been commissioned by wealthy families. They were originally just playing cards for the elite, and were not used for fortune telling. Tarot's popularity spread throughout Europe in the 17th century, and it was at this time that the most influential deck the "Tarot de Marseille" was created. This is standardized the imagery of the tarot we see today. Tarot's association with the occult began in the late 1700s with Jean Baptiste Allisette in France, who saw tarot as a mystical tool. With the 19th century occult revival movements, figures like Eliphas Levi began to associate tarot with Kabbalah, astrology, and ceremonial magic. The Hermetic Order Of The Golden Dawn (founded in 1888) also linked tarot to astrology, Hebrew letters, alchemy, and numerology. In 1909 the Rider-Waite-Smith deck was created which changed everything. Fully illustrated minor arcana cards that had rich symbolic storytelling in every card, became the foundation for most modern tarot decks. Today, tarot is seen as a spiritual practice because it serves as a structured mirror for your thoughts, bringing up patterns and insights of the subconscious mind not easily accessed by the conscious mind. It is a tool used for insight, reflection, and meaning making, rather than fortune telling. Tarot should NOT be used to make decisions for you, but it can highlight possible outcomes, reveal emotional biases, and clarify what feels aligned.
