Sanford-Fritch ISD is moving forward with a four-day school week, a change district leaders say could help attract and retain teachers but that has also raised concerns about childcare and student learning. The district said the majority of parents and staff who responded to its survey supported the move, with 80% of parents and 90% of teachers in favor of the change. Not everyone is convinced. Vice President Stacey Boothe questioned whether the shift is best for students, saying, “Do I think it is the best for the students? I still do not, I’m not convinced.” Superintendent Kim Surles said the district plans to track student performance and can reverse course if needed. “We’re going to monitor our test scores and keep track of what how our students are progressing,” Surles said. “If our students seem to decline in their scores and how they’re learning, we can always go back to the five-day schedule the following school year.” Surles also said the district believes the schedule could benefit students by reducing burnout and giving families more time together. “Because it helps with, you know, students are becoming burned out as far as days go. And so this gives them an extra day of rest. It also gives them more family time,” Surles said. Childcare was one of the main concerns discussed during the meeting. Boothe said limited daycare options could create challenges for working parents. “We do not have really very much daycare. We have a couple of home daycares, and they’re full,” Boothe said. “So, I think overall, you know, it’ll be a good thing for the school, but I just worry about the kids that, you know, may need school five days a week.” Surles said parents may have different options to consider, including help from older students. “We’ll have several high school students who will be available to babysit and watch kids who, you know, may not have childcare,” Surles said. “And we know parents typically figure that solution out for the summers, spring break, Christmas.” The four-day school week will go into effect for the next school year. __________ Have a tip?
