A huge amount of torque is required to laminate the layers that create thick beam. That pressure is applied on a MikroBeamer by the Clamp Bars brought down by the two 5/16" Clamp Bolts. Instead of dealing with washers and nuts the two flanges of the Channel steel are drilled and then thread tapped. In this video I demonstrate how easy it is to tap 5/16" threads into steel 1/8" to 3/16" thick with nothing more than an 18V cordless driver. This is a series of videos documenting the build of a MikroBeamer, a DIY heavy-duty clamping system for fabricating laminated wood beams from multiple boards. The beams made from this device can be used to build Post and Rail, Post and Beam and Timber Frame style woodworking projects such as for the building of beds, bunks and dorm-room lofts.
