In this video, I explore the album 'Time Out', the band who made it and the engineers who recorded it. I play excerpts to illustrate its genius and to convince, even the most cynical, that this truly is a great work of art, a great recording. Listening to Time Out today, it's easy to forget how progressive and unique it was back in 1959 when it was recorded. Not only did it sell over 1 million copies, it turned cool jazz mainstream, but in many ways this incredibly innovative and brilliantly performed album is way more than that. Within the structure and confines of its strict rhythmic patterns, the four musicians are each given the space to extemporize and show off their virtuosity and sheer musicality. Like J.S. Bach or even early Mozart, it is a beautifully evocative work, constructed with the knowledge of classical forms.
