DTPA Scan is done as a functional evaluation of kidneys.it is a radionuclide scan. 99m Diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid used as nucleotide. DTPA is a small molecule, exclusively excreted by glomeruli, indirectly indicating the glomerular filtration rate. Before conducting DTPA renal scan patient is allowed to take lots of fluid. The test consists of three phases -- perfusion, uptake and excretion phases. Cortical transit observed in every 3 mins. Time activity curve compares functional status of both kidneys. If the uptake is less than 10 % in comparison to other kidney, then it is considered as a non-functioning kidney and nephrectomy may be considered as per symptoms of the patient. Indications of DTPA scan are- end stage renal disease, CRF, to detect non-functioning kidney, occlusion of renal perfusion like renal artery stenosis, obstruction in excretion like PUJ obstruction, functional status of kidney after renal transplant, to detect acute rejection after renal transplant.
