In 2016, when I was in 6th grade, I participated in a political rally called the Candlelight Rally. There, participants called for the voluntary resignation of the then-president of South Korea. At that time I realized that my participation can change me, my country, and our world. I could feel firsthand the democracy I had learned theoretically, and my power as a master of my country. Through sharing this experience, I help the audience to realize that, no matter how small, their participation can be as important as a 'candle' that lights the world. Hailing from South Korea, with North Korean ancestry, Dogyu has always been passionate about history and politics. This year, he has won the National History Day competition with his own documentary video. In this inspiring talk, he speaks of the first moment he realized his power as a citizen of a democratic society - a moment which has shaped his interests and future goals of being involved in journalism and politics. Facilitator: Shan Ambrose TED-Ed, TED's education initiative, inspires tomorrow's TED speakers and future leaders by supporting students in discovering, developing and sharing their big ideas in the form of short, TED-style talks. In the TED-Ed Student Talk program, students work together to discuss and celebrate creative ideas through TED-Ed's flexible curriculum.
