We hear the word all the time, but what does it really mean? 🤔 For a long time, I thought trauma only referred to major, catastrophic events—things like war, natural disasters, or severe accidents. But after working with The Guest House (@theguesthouseocala) and becoming certified in psychological trauma, I realized something powerful: 💡 Trauma isn’t just what happens to you—it’s how your nervous system experiences it. Psychologist Martin Seligman introduced the concept of learned helplessness, which helps us understand trauma in a new way: 👉 Trauma is a moment, or moments, of perceived helplessness. If you felt powerless, trapped, or unable to act in a situation, your nervous system registers that experience as trauma. And here’s the key—your body doesn’t care whether it was a Big T trauma (like an accident or assault) or a little t trauma (like ongoing emotional neglect). ✨ If you felt helpless, it mattered.
