Introductory Calculus Question (y=1/x) In this video I use the limiting chord process to differentiate y=1/x. Little bit tricky but once you see it done once it isn't too hard. G’day guys got an introductory calculus questions they will be asked to find the derivative of the reciprocal of X at the point X equals a half why equals two. So I’m going to assume you guys are all have a familiar knowledge of the process of differentiation. So I’m not going to explain that in too much detail in this video. Okay so let’s get straight to it to find the gradient of the function at this coordinate point have the first take the derivative of the reciprocal of X. So because the reciprocal of x can be written as X to the power of negative one we have the function's derivative going to be negative X to the power of -2. By using some basic index laws we can then rearrange or re-write this expression as the derivative of wire with respect to X being equal to negative one over X to the power of two. Finally, to evaluate the derivative at this coordinate. We simply substitute in the X value in our coordinate which is a half and then we evaluate it. So valuating this function gives negative one over a quarter which hopefully you guys are all aware is equal to negative four. So that guys is a basic introduction to how derivatives can be used to value wait gradients at particular points within of functions domain. I suggest that you spent quite a bit of time making sure that you are very fluent in completing these particular problems because they only get more difficult from here. If you’re wondering as to the importance of learning how to compute derivatives or do calculus from one person to another this could be if you were going to go on to any kind of test restudy is the most important type of maths that you might ever learn. It is involved in basically any kind of higher order maths used in the real world. thanks guys for watching my video if you liked it here thumbs up and subscribe to my channel and make new videos almost every single day so sending use my way is a big help thank you. Until next time guys keep practising and keep enjoying your maths. If you would like me to help you with any problems that your having with school, drop me a line at harry.w.walden@gmail.com
