A teacher’s presence is how a teacher uses their physical self to interact with their students throughout the classroom. This involves the teacher using their voice, body language, and visibility to improve management and discipline while also keeping students engaged. A teacher’s presence is vital for establishing a classroom culture and routine. Students are naturally aware of their surroundings, and so teachers can take advantage of their presence to proactively prevent student misbehavior. A teacher’s presence also creates a sense of belonging in the classroom, and can motivate learners. Utilizing presence for management allows the teacher to reach their classroom management goals. Teacher presence builds the confidence of both the teacher and students in the classroom. Teacher Voice is a strategy that teachers can use to community their role as a classroom leader and authority by developing a clear, confident teaching voice. Teachers build a strong and convincing voice by paying close attention to their posture, volume, and projection. After assessing the needs in the classroom, the teacher targets implementing changes to the presence in the classroom. The teacher corrects their posture to stand tall and maintain eye contact, and should practice this technique in a mirror. After, the teacher can enlist the help of a colleague to give them feedback on their volume level in the classroom. Finally, the teacher practices using projection to speak clearly and enunciate so that their students understand the lesson easily. Using a teacher’s presence for classroom management is extremely effective, but still takes effort and awareness on the part of the teacher to be successful. Teachers must be aware of the needs of their individual students and how some may react more sensitively to a teacher’s presence than others. It is also important to keep in mind that over-utilizing a loud and stern teacher voice will diminish its effectiveness over time. These strategies take time and consistency, and although students naturally tune in to a teacher’s body language, some may be more resistant or look for a power struggle. Teachers should be patient with themselves and learn what personas work best for their students. 1) How has my teaching persona already affected the demeanor of my students? How can I tell? 2) What do I foresee being the most challenging aspect of developing my persona, and what can I do to stay proactive? 3) Which elements of the infographic have I already tried, and why did it work / not work?
