Otoshidama is one of the seasonal traditions of New Year. Its origin goes back to the "round rice cakes" given to children. It originated from the idea of offering round rice cakes to the New Year God and sharing the wishes for life and growth that were put into them. This "Otoshidama" (year-end spirit) has evolved into the modern Otoshidama. This custom, which began in the Middle Ages, has passed down from samurai giving swords and townspeople distributing fans and medicines to the present day, mainly in the form of money. However, there is a rule that Otoshidama should not be given to superiors, and it has become established as a gift from adults to children. The "wishes" put into the small envelopes are more than just a monetary amount. When we were children, we looked with shining eyes and wondered with anticipation, "I wonder how much is in it?" Those who are now the givers are surely handing them over with those feelings in their hearts. Otoshidama is a symbol of hope for the new year. May everyone hold on to those wishes this year and have a peaceful one. #Otoshidama #JapaneseTradition #NewYearScenes #FamilyTies #NewYearWishes
