Digital Twins of Modern Power Systems – Requirements and Experience | Jan 11th, 2024

Presentation Abstract Digital twin of an actual power system is the real time digital clone of that power system. The digital twin can assist with planning and operation of the system and allows comprehensive dynamic studies and power equipment testing. Due to changes in power system dynamics caused by inverter-based generations and smart loads, the digital twin is expected to be accurate for a wide range of frequencies (DC to tens of kilo Hertz). Therefore, an electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulator is essential for digital twins. With technological advancements, real time simulators have become capable of accurately simulating large power systems consisting of inverter-based generations and exchanging data with external equipment and programs using standard interfaces. This presentation will highlight the simulation requirements for a digital twin and experience gained through RTDS digital twin projects. Short Bio of the Presenter Arunprasanth Sakthivel received the B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees from University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka and the Ph.D. degree from the University of Manitoba, Canada all in Electrical Engineering. He joined RTDS Technologies Inc. in 2016 and is currently a Senior Simulation Engineer assisting RTDS users worldwide. Arunprasanth is experienced in modelling, simulation, and stability analysis of practical power systems using computer simulation tools. He is passionate about transient simulation and stability analysis of inverter rich power systems.
