William Carey (17 August 1761 – 9 June 1834) was an English Christian missionary and Particular Baptist minister widely regarded as the "father of modern missions." He was a linguist, translator, social reformer, cultural anthropologist, and educator. Born in Paulerspury, Northamptonshire, England, Carey started as a shoemaker and self-taught scholar. After embracing Baptist beliefs in his twenties, he became a pastor and published a seminal pamphlet, An Enquiry into the Obligations of Christians to Use Means for the Conversion of the Heathens in 1792, which led to the founding of the Baptist Missionary Society. Missionary Work in India Carey arrived in Calcutta (now Kolkata) in 1793. He faced opposition from British authorities and other missionaries and soon relocated to the Danish colony in Serampore (now Shrirampur), where he co-founded the Serampore Mission. Alongside Joshua Marshman and William Ward (the "Serampore Trio"), Carey established Serampore College and Serampore Mission Press, and pioneered both higher education and printing in India. Major Achievements Bible Translation: Carey translated the Bible into Bengali, Oriya, Marathi, Hindi, Assamese, and Sanskrit, among others. He also translated parts of the Bible into nearly 30 other languages and dialects. Education: Founded schools and Serampore College, the first degree-awarding university in India, providing higher education to both Christians and non-Christians. Social Reform: Carey campaigned against social evils such as infanticide and the practice of sati (widow burning). He also encouraged the government to promote the use of Indians as missionaries and played a role in forming the Agricultural Society of India. Linguistics: Apart from Bible translation, Carey prepared grammars and dictionaries in several Indian languages and is sometimes called the “father of Bengali prose.” Legacy William Carey’s innovative and holistic approach to missions combined evangelism, education, linguistic work, and social reform. He is honored for laying the groundwork for modern missionary movements both within India and worldwide. His tireless service and vision for cultural transformation had a profound and lasting impact on Indian society and the global Christian missionary enterprise. Carey passed away on June 9, 1834, in Shrirampur, India. He is respected in both India and abroad for his contributions to educational, social, and religious life #lifechangingmessages #wordofgod #wordoflifechurch #allnightprayer
