Fantastic Dance and Dance Macabre From "Metropolis" (Huppertz) - Played by Full Orchestra conducted by Gottfried Huppertz Recorded by Vox Records, Berlin, January, 1927. Issued No. 8387E Matrix 1288BB Gottfried Huppertz (1887-1937) was a German singer, composer and conductor, who achieved his greatest fame as composer of the musical score for the legendary 1927 Fritz Lang silent film, "Metropolis" and many others. In the annals of film, Fritz Lang's "Metropolis" was and remains an epic masterpiece of inventive German expressionist moviemaking on a grand visual scale. Despite receiving mixed reviews and reception when it was released, it is still regarded as one of the greatest films ever made according to various lists. The plot revolves around a city ruled by industrial titans and the wealthy. The citizens and workers slave to operate the machinery that brings the city to life. The film was said to have been inspired by Fritz Lang's first visit to New York city in 1924. "Vox" ("Vox" being Latin for "Voice") appear to have made their first appearance as a manufacturer of gramophone devices in around 1921 and commenced making records in 1922. The unusual label logo appears to be an art deco design of a "talking head" within a triangular border. As the production of records began to ramp up significantly, the electrical process of recording was developed in the USA. Rather than adopt or licence the American Westrex system, Vox developed their own electrical recording process and were releasing these as early as 1924. As time went on, the fierce competition in the German market caused the sale of Vox records to deteriorate to such an extent that by 1929, they had filed for bankruptcy. Remaining stocks of records were sold at greatly reduced prices. Note regarding this record: The original recording itself is technically competent and has good acoustic atmosphere but is let down by some over-modulation and excessive surface noise (On this disc) in relation to the music content. I have tried various stylii without much improvement. Being a composer's original performance of his own work released at the same time as the film, I think the record is truly significant. Musically, it has a an almost disturbingly futuristic and macabre feel that well suits its title and the concept of Lang's "Metropolis."
