Hi Everyone! My name is Dan, and I am a veterinarian in Nebraska. Today I am talking about prop 129 in Colorado. Prop 129 was passed and this leaves the door open to develop an educational path for people to get a VPA or veterinary professional associate degree. Currently Colorado State is looking into this degree. Colorado Proposition 129, on the November 2024 ballot, aimed to create a new role in veterinary practices known as the Veterinary Professional Associate (VPA). This position would serve as a mid-level provider, similar to a physician assistant in human healthcare, requiring a master’s degree in veterinary clinical care. VPAs would be allowed to perform tasks like diagnosing animals, conducting routine surgeries, and ordering tests under the supervision of a licensed veterinarian. Supporters argued that the role could help address Colorado’s veterinary shortage, especially in rural areas and shelters, and potentially reduce costs by freeing up veterinarians for more complex cases. Key supporters included animal welfare groups like the ASPCA and the Dumb Friends League, who believe this measure would expand access to care statewide. Opponents, including many veterinary professionals, raised concerns about the training adequacy for the VPA role, arguing it could lead to substandard care without necessarily lowering costs. The opposition was led by groups like the Colorado Veterinary Medical Association, which believes that recent expansions of vet tech roles are a better approach to meeting demand than creating an entirely new position
