Why Was the Carrack Made?

The short answer to the question in the title is to facilitate large volume transport over great distances. The carrack was a Portugeese ship developed from the Hanseatic cog combined with the developments made with the caravel. Thus the carrack was both manouverable and could handle large volumes of goods. The carrack was also one of the first ships with combined rigging having both square rig and lateen sails. This made it the ancestor of the advanced rigging plans of the age og sail.
