Jorge Oteiza (Orio, 1908 – San Sebastián, 2003), es uno de los artistas vascos fundamentales del arte minimalista mundial del siglo XX. Los ecos de la obra «oteiciana» en sus diferentes vertientes (plástica o teórica) son perceptibles, a partir de los años cincuenta hasta nuestros días, en disciplinas como la escultura, la pintura, la arquitectura, la poesía, la estética, el cine, la antropología, la educación o la política. De formación autodidacta, Oteiza comenzó realizando esculturas dentro de la órbita del expresionismo o del primitivismo que iniciado por Gaugin, Picasso o Derain, se desarrolla a través de Brancusi, Epstein y otros. Tras una larga estancia en Sudamérica, el escultor va desarrollando teórica y prácticamente los fundamentos de su estética, y el escultor «natural» que llevaba dentro, va dando los pasos necesarios para convertirse en el artista que de algún modo está en control de sus mecanismos y herramientas.
