Coming from the Oregon Coast, we head inland to Springfield, Oregon, THE official home of The Simpsons! We spend the evening exploring downtown Springfield searching for the murals representing the characters from the hit television series. Some the murals are hidden in alleyways and behind buildings, but most are out in the open for an easy drive by. The history of The Simpsons murals in Springfield, Oregon, is closely tied to the show's longstanding connection with the city of Springfield, as well as to the collaboration between the town and the creators of The Simpsons. Origin of The Simpsons Murals Connection to Springfield: The Simpsons creator, Matt Groening, has often hinted that the fictional Springfield in the show is named after Springfield, Oregon. Groening grew up in Portland, Oregon, and has used many Oregonian references in the show. The idea of creating murals to celebrate the connection between The Simpsons and Springfield, Oregon, was initiated by the local community and the Springfield City Council. This initiative was aimed at boosting tourism and celebrating the cultural connection. The first mural was unveiled on August 25, 2014. It features the Simpson family, created in collaboration with The Simpsons creator Matt Groening and Twentieth Century Fox Television. This mural is located on the west side of the Emerald Art Center in downtown Springfield. Matt Groening played a significant role in the creation and design of the murals.
