Turkey official visits Brussels, comment on Gulen

(3 Aug 2016) A Turkish lawmaker said on Wednesday Ankara is preparing an extradition request for US-based Muslim cleric Fethullah Gulen, who they believe engineered a July 15 coup attempt, amid concern that he could still be directing "sleeper cells" from Pennsylvania. Sena Nur Celik from Turkey's ruling AK Party said that Turkish authorities have already sent the first batch of evidence to US authorities and are gathering further evidence to submit a formal extradition request to their US counterparts. Speaking in Brussels, where she was leading a visiting parliamentary delegation, Celik warned that the Turkish people will believe that the US are "harbouring" Gulen if he doesn't face justice in the Turkish courts. She said it was imperative for national security to prevent another coup attempt and that Turkey's allies should cooperate in countering the threat. Thousands have been detained in a crackdown the government says is aimed at purging Gulen sympathisers from the Turkish security, justice and public services, after the coup attempt, in which at least 270 people died.
