The street has borne the name "Mont Orgueilleux" (Proud Mount) since the 13th century, as it led to a hill, or small hill, now the Bonne-Nouvelle district. According to Victor Hugo's novel, Les Misérables, the Rue de Montorgueil owes its name to the jack, a tool used to lift heavy loads up a low hill, formerly called "l'orgueil" (the pride). In "Le Ventre de Paris" (The Belly of Paris, 1873), Émile Zola mentions the inn "Le Compas d'Or" (The Golden Compass). "Rue Montorgueil" is a painting by Claude Monet, created in 1878.
