Our story begins with 35 years of brutal Japanese occupation, a sudden and arbitrary division of the 1000 year-old nation in 1945, followed by three more years of occupation by the U.S.S.R. in the North and the U.S. in the South. Wholesale purges of landowners and Christians ensue in the North, while riots, pitch battles and guerrilla warfare develop in the South. When Kim Il Sung comes to power in the North, and Syngman Rhee in the South, they shared a common burning desire to conquer the other and unite Korea. Thus, an endless war is initiated based on mistakes, miscalculations, and misunderstandings that began with major losses for the South.
