D&RGW 477: The Silverton Mixed Autumn Flyer

On October 18th and 19th, 2024, I, along with several railfans and photographers, attended a two-day photo charter hosted by Trains Magazine on the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. The first day had the photo train traveling from Durango to Silverton with many photo runbys and a night photo session in Silverton. Then the next day would have many photo runbys on the return trip to Durango and a separate paid-for night photo session hosted by Lerro Photography at the D&S Roundhouse. Thanks to Pete Lerro (who attended and helped run the photo charter) and the other people running the photo special, they all did a fantastic job of making it a fun and unforgettable experience. Original D&S No. 476 was tasked with hauling the photo train in Rio Grande lettering. However, due to a last-minute mechanical failure of the locomotive, the D&S decided to use sister engine 473 instead. To make it special, 473 was re-lettered to masquerade as its scrapped sibling, No. 477. Enjoy D&RGW 477 (D&S 473) haul a mixed train from Durango to Silverton and back. Enjoy runbys at a variety of locations, with several having multiple runbys. While it was cloudy both days with rain and some snow, that didn't spoil our photo train as it traveled through the beautiful fall colors of Southwestern Colorado; in my opinion, the snow and rain were a good treat.
