Reno 2006 Dago Red practice and qualification with blown engine, and mayday landing

Reno 2006 saw Dago return, but this time she was being fielded by Dan Martin and his team. Dan and his crew installed the race engine in Dago just prior to the races with not a whole lot of time to shake things out. During the early part of the week, Dan was able to get some practice laps in with no issues, but unfortunately during the qualifying attempt with the Merlin running well, the ADI check valve failed which caused the engine to overheat rapidly. Dan called a mayday, but before he could get the racer down, the engine blew a hole in the case and spewed oil all down both sides of the airframe. Dan landed safely on runway 8, but the engine was done. The second race motor was installed, but unfortunately started producing too much metal after a test run. Team Dago Red was out of the races for 2006.....
