Patan Durbar Square Patan Durbar Square is one of the three royal palace squares located in the Kathmandu Valley, Nepal, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Situated in the heart of the city of Lalitpur, it is a spectacular showcase of Newari architecture and craftsmanship. The square was the former royal palace of the Malla Kings of Lalitpur. Its history dates back to the Licchavi period, but most of the current structures were built during the Malla era between the 16th and 18th centuries. Key architectural and cultural highlights include: The Royal Palace: Known for its exquisite courtyards, like Sundari Chowk and Keshav Narayan Chowk, and the royal bath, Tusha Hiti. Krishna Mandir: A unique stone temple built in the Shikhara style, dedicated to Lord Krishna. Bhimsen Temple: A three-story temple dedicated to Bhimsen, the god of trade and commerce for the Newar community. Hiranya Varna Mahavihar (The Golden Temple): A Buddhist monastery famous for its golden facade and intricate artwork. Manga Hiti: One of the most famous and ancient water spouts in the valley. Despite suffering significant damage in the 2015 earthquake, the square remains a living museum. It is a vibrant center of culture and religion, where daily life, festivals, and rituals continue amidst its historic grandeur, making it a must-visit destination in Nepal.
