Koti Chennaya refers to the legendary Tulu twin heroes Koti and Chennayya, who are central figures in the folklore and identity of Tulu Nadu in coastal Karnataka, India. Basic identity Koti and Chennayya are revered twin warrior brothers from the Tulu community, remembered as protectors of the poor and oppressed. They are key figures of the Tulu epic “Koti-Chennayya,” one of the major long narrative traditions (paddanas) of the Tulu language. Period and birthplace Most accounts place their lifetime roughly in the 16th century (around 1556–1591 A.D.). Their traditional birthplace is Padumale in present-day Puttur taluk of Dakshina Kannada district, Karnataka. Family and community They were born to Deyi Baidethi (Deyi Baidati), a woman from the Billava/Baidya toddy-tapper community of Tulu Nadu. Because of their mother’s connection to the Billava community, they are especially venerated among Billavas and other marginalized groups in the region.
