THCA is the precursor to delta-9 THC, and is commonly found in high amounts in marijuana flower. Both marijuana and hemp make THCA, but the only real difference is the amount produced in each variety. From a legal perspective, hemp should have less than 0.3% delta-9 THC by weight to be considered legal. This brings up an interesting legal and scientific problem. Often it takes the state weeks to get the results, and the hemp flower has increased its THCA amount in that time. So even when the early tests show compliance, by the time of harvest the hemp flower may be on par with conventional marijuana amounts.
