#foilarmsandhog #fahnartchallenge Day 13 Squatters I decided to try and share a little bit of the process of video editing. There’s a lot of assessment in video editing. You come to the end of a piece and assess what it gets across and what it doesn’t. I wanted to convey that in this video but it’s hard to put enough words on screen to do it properly as a wall of text is overwhelming. So if you’re really interested there is a more detailed kind of blog post about it all here. In the first summary, I focused on setting up plot points and jokes and then resolving them. As Arms/Derek spoke of ‘resolution’. For example, the name confusion set up by Suits at the start and then Chris getting the name wrong later. (Though Suits saying he’s called Aragorn is actually my favourite example of that.) I decided to include Aodhagan’s storyline because of Arms/Derek’s reference to ‘plot twists’. I felt this storyline showed one. I suppose the kind of marathon it is is kind of a plot twist the way I’ve shown it but it’s not really a secret in the episode. A joke for sure but I’ve just done it visually. I really wanted to include the joke about Aoghan’s shirt being ‘starched’ as well as setting up Chris’ character trait of eating 3 different kinds of potatoes but the shot wouldn’t work as it was the same angle as the one before and I couldn’t put it later as I really wanted the hard cut to them watching the video games. If this is a recurring character trait hopefully it could be re-established in another episode. One thing I don’t feel I’ve got across is the growing closeness between Suits and Chris as Suits switches sides when they bond over video games. Only possibly in the fact that they sit together. Failing to establish that the elderly diners were already dead did make the ending rather darker than intended! I do still wonder whether to end on Arms’ alarmed “They’re dead?!” Hog’s line sounds a bit off as I banjaxed it together from another bit of the conversation. I think it helps to know their names though otherwise you’d be like “who?” when Arms refers to who he will kill by name. If I knew whether the fact the diners were dead would be re-established in the next episode or needed to be set up in this reminder then I would know more what to focus on highlighting. Usually the plot of the next episode would inform what threads need to be pulled out and highlighted. Either because they would be continued or because they would not be covered so the audience needed to be reminded of them or both. I did spend some time wondering if I needed to set up that Chris' position in the house was in jeopardy to get the full resolution of him saying “So I can stay?” at the end but I think being told to get out is alarming enough in any situation. Chris’ character shows the ‘character development' Arms/Derek was referring to. Though not sure I conveyed how much of a pushover he was at the start. Maybe in being ordered to the ground… I hope this has given you a little bit of an insight into the video editing process if you are interested in having one. Thank you for reading all the way down here if you did. :)
