This film has always had element issues and edit problems due to how Allied Artists changed and released the film without the makers approval. The original negative is long gone and so this was always going to be a best as-is presentation. The film has been stuck in a variety of extremely shoddy outdated masters and sadly is under the dreaded thumb of Paramount. Paramount has applied their usual destructive practices to this master resulting in a bizarre look that at times makes a higher quality scan look worse than the old crap HD master. It's a hot mess of a transfer made by pods at Paramount. NONE of this needed to happen. As it is we have two examples in the supplements of what a non-Superscope version and a manipulated master would look like. Both are LIGHT YEARS better than this master. Additionally the 1.85 presentation does not properly restore the original ratio and while it gives more picture information also reveals plenty of unaddressed damage simply masked out of the Superscope version. If this was not bad enough the Perspecta Stereo was not included and the original mono which was already processed like crazy on the BDs has been processed EVEN FURTHER. While the picture is a debatable upgrade the audio is certainly a downgrade. There are some nice new extras but not everything from the Olive Signature Blu-ray release has been ported over. All in all it reiterates the feeling we've all had: for some reason this film is cursed to never have a proper release or master.
