Here's a short video of a mini kata (Kihon sho) that I put together for my beginning students. It consists of the six basic uke waza we practice in Koryu Uchinadi, done symmetrically on both sides while using some of the most fundamental karate stances. The video also includes a beginner friendly but functional application for each move, so that various habitual acts of physical violence can be addressed by using techniques learnt during the beginner’s course. It seems to be harder and harder for people, especially the younger generation, to memorise longer sequences. With smartphones, "all" information is in your palm with a few clicks, so there is less of a need to remember things. This obviously means exercising your brain less (or at least differently) than before. With this in mind, I think there is a need for really short kata, that are not too overwhelming for those in the beginning of their martial arts journey. With the covid19 pandemic, it has become even more important to have something simple enough, that also beginners can do on their own. For more ideas on how to put karate's kihon into context, please check my videos on the Kihon Concept, as well as the Taisabaki kata with oyo waza by Hanshi Patrick McCarthy.
