If ever you wondered how people should behave during the national anthem at a sporting event, this is how it's done. In 2006, during the Stanley Cup Finals, Edmonton Oilers fans showed nothing but class and respect for the national anthems of both the United States and Canada. I post this video not out of some jingoistic nonsense, but rather because people in the U.S. always over-politicize the the anthem at sporting events. Also, because I find it embarrassing and loathsome the way fans in Chicago scream and bellow and make a ridiculous spectacle out of the singing of the anthem at hockey games. I'm not some stodgy, old man about it. I just think it's disrespectful to act like drunken idiots during the anthem. We could take a lesson from our neighbors to the north who get it right. It's not about government, war, politics, military might or any of that crap. It's about showing some pride and unity with your neighbors, regardless of all that other nonsense. (yes, I know the lyrics, but think a little deeper than that, please.) And seriously, Chicago, show a little bit of class, just once. Please. No, I do not own this video. I am making no money off this video. I simply thought it was a nice reminder so I posted it. Please don't sue me.
