Two, of course, there are some people here who want to make a name for themselves at our expense so we are looking for IEDS (Improvised Explosive Devices) or threat groups that might take a shot at us, and then lastly we also have got to protect ourselves. So some of our energies go into preventing attacks here on the base." 9. Various of MRAP due to leave Iraq being repaired 10. SOUNDBITE (English) Colonel Scott Efflandt, US Army Commander First Brigade, First Calvary: "It's not has it played a role, it has played a pivotal role. If we did not have the cooperation of the Iraqi security forces and we did not have the support of the Iraqi people, this would be a completely different dynamic and you don't have to think far back in history to think of withdrawals that didn't go well. There is a group of malcontent criminals that are just going to torture and harm people regardless, but that is just a small, small fractional percentage compared to the people who are helping us." 11. Mid of soldiers involved in illumination mortar firing STORYLINE: The daily routine of service in Iraq will soon be a thing of the past for US combat troops, as they prepare for a final withdrawal by the year's end. US military base Kalsu, which lies some 60 miles (about 100 kilometres) south of Baghdad, is a key staging area for the US military drawdown. The soldiers here jokingly refer to the base as a glorified truck stop servicing convoys of troops leaving Iraq on Highway One dubbed MSR (Main Supply Route) Tampa - in military parlance - to the Kuwaiti border. The drawdown has been ongoing for sometime now and will be completed by the month's end. And as the American bases north of Kalsu close down, their convoys pass through here to fill up on petrol and food as soldiers grab a quick break before the drive further south. But Kalsu is also much more than this. The commander of the base, Colonel Scott Efflandt, has served three tours in Iraq.
