Serenade (Schön war die Zei/ das wir uns so geliebt) [Beautiful was the time/when we were so much in love] Engl. Waltz (Peter Kreuder /Hans Beckmann) – Hans Weigelschmidt m.s. Tanz-Orchester, Refrainges.: Wilfried Sommer, Gloria 1937 (Germany) NOTE: This lovely English waltz was written by Peter Kreuder - one of the most eminent German pop-composers of all times, who was also a superb pianist and accompanist to the most demanding German stars as Marlene Dietrich or Greta Keller. This song was a hit in Germany in 1937, after it was released in a film drama “Schön war die Zeit” with the couple of popular Third Reich actors Willi Forst and Hilde Krahl. Interestingly, in that film was also featured a talented and handsome Polish film- and cabaret artist Igo Sym from Warsaw. Unfortunately, his successful collaboration with the Third Reich movie business during the 1930s become fatal for him several years later, when the Germans invaded Poland in September 1939. Igo Sym declared himself a Volksdeutsch and soon thereafter he was nominated by the Nazi authorities, the director of theatres and cinemas in Warsaw. His task was also to persuade most popular Polish stage and film actors, whom he had been well-acquainted with - to cease the boycott of Nazi-administered theatres in the occupied Poland. (During the 2nd World War in Poland - on the contrary to occupied France –the majority of self-respecting Polish actors had not performed publicly and appeared solely on the clandestine performances, arranged in the private apartments). For his collaboration with the occupier, Igo Sym was sentenced to death by the Polish resistance and shot in the street in March 1941.
