Isak Pretorius' TEDxJohannesburg talk is a critical examination of the traditional proverb "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach him to fish and you feed him for a lifetime," in the context of addressing food security. Isak challenges the notion that teaching people to fish is a one-size-fits-all solution. He advocates for a more comprehensive, multifaceted approach that considers the unique circumstances of communities, combining elements such as grants, NGO efforts, credit access, and long-term investment in agribusiness to move beyond mere sustenance to regenerative economies that allow communities to thrive in achieving food security. In 2020, Isak designed an electronic food voucher system to streamline COVID-19 food distribution, keeping communities and informal businesses alive. As head of ForAfrika, he's leading the charge for 20 million Africans to sustainably provide for themselves by 2032, addressing diverse community needs and fostering robust small businesses to see Africa thrive. With two decades in the humanitarian and business sectors, he advises governments, donors, businesses, and NGOs on sustainable and regenerative programs. A University of South Africa graduate and active YPO member, deeply dedicated to serving Africa. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
